The
development of the Glasshouses in Killult started in the late
1960s. The site was owned by Gaeltarra Éireann and covered 8
acres under glass, all of which was heated by oil. There were 26 full-time
and 26 part-time workers at peak employment and the main crop was tomatoes.
Early
Potato and Carrot production began in the early 1970s but by the mid
70s the rising price of oil had made it impossible to continue to heat
the glasshouses. Business ceased in 1976.
Between
1976 and 1989 the site lay derelict. The houses collapsed through a
combination of neglect and heavy storms. Shattered glass lay everywhere.
In
the 1990s 'Fiontar Cloich Cheann Fhaola' - Cloughaneely Community Enterprise,
a local group which emerged from Coiste Paróiste Ghort a Choirce,
show an interest in renovating the glasshouses for the local community.
They engaged local Voluntary workers and various FÁS schemes
to breathe some life into the place once more.
From
1997 to 1999 CCE sought the assistance of MFG Teo. in advancing the
project. MFG research showed that local smallholders identified training
and information as major needs in the area. In response to this, 1 acre
of glasshouse was saved and repaired and preparations were made for
training to begin.
Between
2000 and 2002 'Clár FAN' – Forbairt Acmhainní Nádúrtha
(A Programme for the Development of Natural Resources) was set up by
CCE and MFG. A course in Horticultural skills was developed with Teagasc
and then certified by FETAC. Two trainers were employed with the assistance
of FÁS and Údaras na Gaeltachta who developed infrastructure
(a classroom etc.) enabling the training to begin. DSCFA also gave assistance
towards training.
Finally,
in 2003 MFG took on 5-year lease from Ú na G, and managed the
centre for one year. They made preparations to form an independent limited
company to manage the centre. Training and production continued during
this time with the help of a FÁS Community Employment scheme.
The company formed to run the centre was 'LAN Teo.' – Lárionad
Acmhainní Nádúrtha Teoranta (Centre for Natural
Resources). They also formed a Community Training and Enterprise Company
and are concerned with Sustainable Development of Natural Resources
in the local area.
